Triple bill of historical adventures. In 'The Eagle' (2010) Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum), a young soldier in 140 AD Roman-occupied England, sets out to honour his father's memory by tracking down the long-missing Roman Ninth Legion in which his father once served. Accompanied by his British slave, Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus travels beyond Hadrian's Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia to confront its savage tribes and retrieve the lost legion's golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. In 'Gladiator' (2000) Russell Crowe stars as Maximus, a general beloved of the Emperor, Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris), but feared by the Emperor's son and heir, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). When Aurelius dies and Commodus accedes to the throne, Maximus returns home to find his wife and son killed and only just survives the murderous dictates of the new Emperor himself. Sold into slavery then trained as a gladiator, only thoughts of revenge keep Maximus going as he prepares for a showdown at the Colosseum, presided over by Commodus. In 'Robin Hood' (2010), Sir Robin of Loxley (Crowe) returns from the Crusades to his home in the north of England. There he comes up against the oppressive regime imposed by the tyrannical new Sheriff of Nottingham (Matthew Macfadyen). Outraged by the Sheriff's behaviour and the general state of the region, Robin summons up a group of supporters and puts his formidable archery skills to use in an effort to free the people from corruption and political injustice.
Double bill featuring two popular comedy movies directed by Richard Lester. 'The Three Musketeers' (1973) is the star-studded adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' classic novel. The Three Musketeers (Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay and Richard Chamberlain) are in the service of the King of Paris when D'Artagnan (Michael York) arrives on the scene, creating a stir by single-handedly defeating two soldiers in a magnificent swordfight. Cardinal Richelieu (Charlton Heston) tries to embarrass the Queen of France, but D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers come to her rescue. In 'The Four Musketeers' (1974), Milady (Faye Dunaway) is determined to wreak revenge on the Three Musketeers for foiling her plot to discredit the Queen of France. She enrols two accomplices, Cardinal Richelieu and the Count of Rochefort, and the trio of swashbuckling heroes find themselves once again fighting for the good name of the Queen and the life of Constance.
Powerful drama about loyalties and the industrial workplace in early 60s Britain. Factory worker Tom Arnold (Richard Attenborough) does not share the same feelings as his fellow workers in a developing industrial dispute and refuses to go on strike with them. This results in him being 'sent to Coventry' by all concerned, including his best friend Joe Wallace (Michael Craig). The newspapers soon hear about this and the story becomes a matter of national concern, with many different parties trying to use Tom's stance to their own ends.
Cult horror directed by David Cronenberg. Frank Carveth (Art Hindle)'s wife Nola (Samantha Eggar) is being treated at an institute run by the eccentric psychologist Dr Raglan (Oliver Reed), who is known for using bizarre techniques to break down defensive barriers in the psyche of his patients. After Nola's parents are brutally killed and his daughter returns from a visit to her mother covered in bruises, Frank comes to suspect that his wife and Raglan are up to no good. What he discovers is stranger still: a group of cloned midgets, apparently spurred on by Nora's psychopathic rages, are responsible for the attacks. Since no one else will believe him, it is up to Frank to try and put an end to the violence...
